Abstract

Since its appearance on the world market contraceptive pill promised to set sexuality free and cancel the need of abortion by eliminating unplanned pregnancies. Pope Paul VI in His encyclical “Humanae Vitae” warned the world of the drawbacks of the presumed miracle pill. After forty years every honest man have to recognize the Holy Father was prophetically right. All data available demonstrate the inconsistence of the contraceptive promise. Both longitudinal and cross-sectional observational analysis as well as intervention studies indicate no reduction in abortion rates at a population level, rather they offer some clues confirming the theoretical concerning about an attitude toward the devaluation of human life induced by the contraceptive habit.
