Abstract
Summary: One of the most important issues for ethics and moral theology is the relationship between the passions or emotions and the intelligence–will. Related to this issue is also the question of the motives of our actions. From his Thomistic philosophical and theological background, Grisez offers extremely insightful and original reflections on the classification of human actions (in three groups) according to their genesis, that is, according to whether they arise from emotional or rational motives, emphasizing the importance of “choice” for morality, and highlighting a type of action little considered in classical moral theology: spontaneous
actions or those “motivated only sensibly, although guided by the intelligence”. It is therefore worthwhile to present the thought of this author on these topics.
