Abstract

This article investigates the ontological status of algorithms and artificial intelligence through the lens of the metaphysics of intensive being developed by Cornelio Fabro within the Thomistic tradition. It argues that algorithms should be understood as intentional artificial entities, distinct from both natural beings and traditional material artifacts. By applying classical metaphysical categories such as ens ab alio and ens rationis cum fundamento in re, the paper situates algorithms at the lowest degree of ontological intensity. The analysis then extends to contemporary forms of artificial intelligence, especially generative AI, proposing a graded ontological hierarchy from symbolic AI to deep learning systems. While generative AI exhibits dynamic and creative behaviors, these are interpreted as simulations of intentionality rather than expressions of genuine intrinsic intentionality. The article critically engages contemporary philosophy of technology to avoid both anthropomorphism and reductionism. Ultimately, it maintains that AI systems possess only derived and instrumental being, dependent on human intentionality and material substrates. This metaphysical clarification provides a foundation for a more sober ethical and philosophical assessment of artificial intelligence.
