Abstract
Saint John of the Cross mentions little of the beatitudes of Saint Matthew in his works. However, the evangelical logic of the beatitudes resonates in such a way in the saint's writings that his teaching could well be synthesized in macarism: Coming of delight is the dark night because it leads to the transforming union of love with God. The three beatitudes that he does mention and interpret from love are used as scriptural foundations respectively for the active and passive purgation of the night of the spirit and the fruitfulness of spiritual marriage.
